Mobile Tyre Fitting vs the Garage: Which Is Cheaper and Faster?

Mobile and emergency tyre fitting across Newport, Cardiff, Bristol and Chepstow. RAC approved and on the road 24 hours a day.

Both will get a tyre on your car. They differ on what it costs you overall, how long it takes out of your day, and whether the option is even available when you need it. Here is an honest comparison.

The quick answer

If you need one or two tyres and your time has any value at all, mobile fitting usually wins. If you need a full set of premium tyres, no urgency, and you enjoy a morning in a waiting room, a garage can occasionally come out slightly cheaper on the headline price.

The rest of this post explains why.

Cost: the headline price is not the real price

Garages advertise a per-tyre price that looks lower because their overheads are spread across a high volume of jobs. Fair enough. But that price assumes you deliver the car to them.

Add the costs that do not appear on the quote:

  • Getting there on a damaged tyre, which is either unsafe or impossible
  • Recovery or a taxi, if the tyre is flat
  • Time off work, which for most people is the single biggest hidden cost
  • A second trip, if they do not have your size in stock

Mobile fitting has none of those. The van carries the tyre to you and the job happens while you carry on with your day. For most single-tyre jobs, the total real cost is lower even when the headline price is slightly higher.

Speed: hours versus a day

A garage visit is rarely just the fitting time. It is the drive there, the wait for a bay, the fitting, and the drive back. Even a well-run garage typically costs you half a day, and if you cannot get a same-day slot it costs you two journeys.

Mobile fitting is around 10 to 15 minutes per tyre once the technician arrives, and you are doing something else while it happens. In an emergency, that difference is the difference between a delay and a lost day.

Convenience: this is where it is not close

Mobile fitting comes to your driveway, your office car park, or the hard shoulder. It works at seven in the morning and at midnight. It works when the car cannot be driven at all, which is exactly the situation where a garage is least useful.

The one scenario where a garage has the edge is when you want other work done at the same time, such as an MOT, tracking or brakes. If you are already booked in for something else, adding tyres to that visit makes sense.

Quality: does mobile fitting cut corners?

This is the most common concern and the easiest to answer. A properly equipped mobile van carries the same core kit as a tyre bay: a fitting machine, a wheel balancer, a torque wrench and a calibrated inflator. The tyres are the same tyres from the same manufacturers.

What matters is the operator, not the location. Look for RAC approval, look for real reviews, and ask whether balancing is included as standard. If a mobile fitter cannot balance a wheel on site, that is a genuine red flag.

Availability: out of hours changes everything

Most garages close at five or six and shut on Sundays. Punctures do not observe opening hours. A 24 hour mobile service is the only option that exists at two in the morning, which is a strong argument on its own.

Which should you choose?

Choose mobile fitting if the tyre is flat or unsafe, you cannot spare half a day, you need it outside working hours, or you run vehicles that cannot afford downtime.

Choose a garage if you are already booked in for an MOT or other work and the tyre is not urgent.

For businesses running vans or cars, the calculation is not close at all. A vehicle off the road costs far more per hour than the difference in tyre price, which is why our fleet customers work almost exclusively on mobile fitting.
